English and Welsh National Championships

This term saw England and Wales Table Tennis Associations hold their annual National championships. Three of Charles Read Academy’s Table Tennis Scholars, Mollie Patterson, Danielle Kelly and Connor Green were involved across various age categories. Despite Mollie only being 15 years old she qualified through her national rankings to enter the Senior Womens event where she reached the Quarter Finals before eventually being eliminated by the overall champion. On reflection Mollie can be pleased with her performances however she feels she had moments in the match where she could have advanced to the semi-finals herself.

Danielle Kelly, who also is in year 11 at Charles Read Academy, competed in the Welsh National Championships in Cardiff. Danielle went into the Junior (u18) event as the number 1 seed and comfortably advanced to the final but just fell short of the gold medal to her national team mate. This was Danielles first Welsh National Championships and can be pleased with her silver medal performance. She is already determined to return next year to go one better and pick up the gold medal.

Finally, Year 8 student Connor Green competed in the Cadet National championships which sees the top 10 highest ranked U15 players across the country compete for the national title. Despite being 2 years younger than most players in the competition Connor performed really well and narrowly missed out on a bronze medal position. Connor showcased his ability by beating the players who finished 1st and 2nd, Rhys Davies and Louis Price during the championships but fell just short of the medal positions as he dropped 3 of his 9 matches. 1 more victory would have secured Connor at least a medal from the championships however he can be pleased overall with his performances. The future in this event is looking bright for Connor who will return next year with another year of experience under his belt.
