English Schools National Table Tennis Finals – Champions 2019

On Saturday 23rd March Charles Read Academy were crowned 2019 National Schools Table Tennis Champions, retaining the prestigious title that dates back to the 1960s, for the second year in a row.

The team of four girls represented Charles Read Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, in the U16 category where they took on the regional champions from across England at the Butterfly School Team Finals held in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

Table Tennis Scholars Mollie Patterson, Danielle Kelly, Raquel Sao Pedro and Jodie Morris travelled to the Finals with an unbeaten record throughout the competition with victories against schools from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lancashire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Yorkshire in the County and Regional rounds.

Determined to maintain their fine form and 100% record, Charles Read got off to a really strong start and set the tone for the rest of the competition with a 6-2 victory over last years runners up Okehampton College (Devon). Despite two Charles Read players having to forfeit a couple of games due to injury and illness the girls still managed to earn 6-2 victories against Priory Ruskin Academy (Lincolnshire) and Wood Green (Warwickshire) before being crowned undefeated champions.

The academy hope to add more national titles, with the upcoming singles event in April which has already seen four Charles Read scholars qualify for the finals. Connor Green, Dylan Tynan, Raquel Sao Pedro and Jodie Morris all advanced to the national finals as Lincolnshire schools individual champions in the U13 Boys, U16 Boys, U16 Girls and U19 Girls categories, where they will represent the county.

A huge well done and thank you to everyone involved in making this happen, including Gavin Evans and Natalie Green who coach the team over 30 hours a wekk in partnership with Grantham College Table Tennis Academy. Charles Read would also like to say thank you to the academy's sponsor, David Ross for the support in the academy's Table Tennis Programme
