Former student of Grantham’s Charles Read Academy is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

A former student of Grantham’s Charles Read Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, is set to climb Africa’s highest peak in aid of a charity close to her heart.

Nicola Brackenbury, who is now studying at the University of Hull, will travel to Tanzania in August 2018 to tackle the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Childreach International; a charity that ensures children in vulnerable communities have access to improved education, protection and healthcare.

During her time in Tanzania, the qualified Early Years Practitioner will take part in a number of projects supporting local children and will see the impact of the charity’s work first-hand.

Nicola recently returned to Charles Read Academy, where she obtained 9 GCSEs in 2014, to deliver an assembly to students about her upcoming trip and how her fundraising efforts will help children in disadvantaged areas.

The university student, who is currently studying to become a primary school teacher, said: “From a young age, I have always known that I want to help disadvantaged children. Childreach International is a charity close to my heart, as I believe that every child should have the right to receive a high-quality education.

“I am honoured to be taking part in such an incredible and rewarding challenge and to help raise much-needed funds for such an inspiring charity.”

Robert Sloan, Principal at Charles Read Academy, said: “It was fantastic to see our current students fully engaged throughout Nicola’s presentation.

“During her time at Charles Read Academy, Nicola benefitted from an incredible amount of support from her teachers, which has enabled her to continue her educational journey and train for her dream job as a primary school teacher.

“We are so pleased to see Nicola taking so much pride in her involvement with the charity and wish her the best of luck for the big climb in August.”

As part of the David Ross Education Trust, Charles Read Academy is at the centre of its local community, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere and embracing the values of outstanding community citizenship.
